Getting Started http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4:getting-started&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=6 http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4:getting-started&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=6 Let's get started about the World Wide Web - also known as the Internet!

This is a small introduction for the beginner.

First find somebody, or some company that you can trust - both in the quality of their work and knowledge of the subject matter, as well as the related fees.

It is good to have an idea of WHAT you want, but do not be surprised that during the due diligence more things may surface and your original view may be enhanced.

If it is about a web site, get an idea of what you may want (in terms of looks and content) and show them to your web designer.

Put time into the project yourself.  Even if you find the best web partner, it does take time from your end to present your business and vision to them.

Your Domain Name http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=11:web-domain&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=7 http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=11:web-domain&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=7 This is the MOST important thing to do -- More important than your web designer and the web host.

Try to get a good domain name, since this may stay with you, even if you change everything else.

And hurry... Names are running out, as more and more people are getting on the internet.

Some of the questions to answer and things to consider:

  • If you have a company name/identity it is good to get a name that is exactly the same (if possible) or at least resembles it.
  • If not, try to find/create a company identity first -- the web domain just goes with it.
  • This is also part of having a proper Logo and a Motto.
  • Choosing your colors is another important related thing.
  • Your web domain name will it be a commercial site (.com) or if you are for example non-profit ( .org).  Or even an .net or .biz
  • The domain suffix will it be international (i.e. .com) or particular to a country
    • for example  .ru  - for Russia, .co.uk for United Kingdom, etc
  • Choose a domain name that is as short and easy to remember.
  • Try, if possible, not to use hyphens (-) as people may not find you if they miss them out.
    • for example use mywebsite.com instead of my-web-site.com
    • There may be cases, though, that the desired name is taken and you may have to settle with one that includes hyphens.
  • The name is not something to be changing every day, so think hard, do some research and get the best one possible.

Your Company Identity http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12:company-identity&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=8 http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=12:company-identity&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=8 Company Brand or Identity is one of the most important things.

This is why in this business you find a lot of marketeers and advertisers.

Because web may be all about marketing and advertising!  (Yes, more often than not it is even more important than technology!).

We urge you to consider this carefully and not hesitate to put the money into it as well.  The image that you will give outside may be critical of whether you will survive as a business -- Especially when your business will be online driven.

Now if the reason you want to have web presence is for extra information and to enhance the existing good image, then things are not so crucial.

Some of things to consider:

  • Logo
  • Colors
  • Images, what you show
  • The way to present your company to the viewer
  • The way to present the products and services

Some tips and advices http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14:some-tips-and-advices&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=10 http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=14:some-tips-and-advices&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=10 Get a good domain name.

Use your web host not jufst for the web site, but try to utilize functions for office automation.

There is no reason to use the internet service provider  as your main email address and NOT use the one from the web site. (Surprisingly enough MANY do this).

Find a web host with rich features and plenty of resources to give out -- such as mail space, disk space, bandwidth, tools, etc.

Use other programs, in addition to web site, such as forums and blogs.

For new software solution requirements for your company look for potential ones that are web-enabled. (Do not use outdated technologies, if possible).  If you are in doubt, do hire an independent software consultant (such as IstoThalassa), sacrifice a small fee, and sleep quiet for the next few years.

Using web-enabled technologies may potentially mean replacing the local area network server with the internet provider and web host infrastructure -- In this way you will avoid the burden to maintain a local server, manage local databases and do local backups.  Instead all these will happen at the web hosting provider premises saving you resources: money and time.  And of course the accessibility will be improved as well as the up-time.  This is especially beneficial if your organization is distributed in more than one geographic location (different offices, cities, even countries).

Additional benefits include you able to access the web software during traveling or via your web enabled mobile phone.

Look into using some freely available tools and software -- yes, sometimes these are better than the paid ones.  Do not hesitate to pay for professional help to dig them out.  For example use Google Calendar, open source forum software, open source content management, open office, etc.

Just Do It! http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=13:just-do-it&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=11 http://istothalassa.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=13:just-do-it&catid=4:getting-started&Itemid=11 The bottom line is that you should get on with it and do it!

Do not forget to do your homework and try all the other things we talked about -- It will greatly help.

And if you feel something is not exactly as you like, you can also make improvements.  Be sure that the next release of your web site will be better than the previous one.  And each new major version will be a leap forward.

Good luck!

We would be more than happy to provide our help to you.
